With the passage of California legislation SB1438 this course was developed to proper a proper understanding of the medication; Naloxone. This course is designed for EMTs, Paramedics, and Law Enforcement. This course meets the training requirements for EMTs Expanded Scope. However, expanded scope requirements vary from agency to agency. Please contact Obsidian for further details.
Classroom
This course reviews the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system. Additionally, students will learn about the opioids effects on the human body and how Naloxone works to change these affects. This course will review how to properly assess the respiratory system, as well as manage patients in respiratory distress using basic airway management techniques. Students will also learn to manage Patients with an Alerted Mental Status and Combative Patients using basic life support techniques. Students will be required to show that they can recognize the indications and the contraindications for the use of Naloxone, including side/adverse effects, routes of administration, dosages, mechanisms of drug action, calculations of drug dosages. Students will need to demonstrate the proper disposal of medical waste. The students will also learn the steps involved in administering Naloxone to include the proper use of personal protective equipment and scene safety awareness, while paying attention to medical asepsis practices. For courses being held in Kern County the students will need to have a thorough understanding of Kern County EMS EMT Protocols applicable to the administration of Naloxone.
Continuing Education Hours: This course provides 4.00 hours of EMS Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) for the initial classroom course; CEHs will be provided via Los Angeles County EMSA approved; CE provider number 19-0725. Healthcare Providers other than EMTs and Paramedics are encouraged to contact their regulatory organizations to confirm acceptance of these CEHs.
